Machine operator dies in ERO Caraíba underground mine accident
A workplace accident at the Pilar underground mine in the Caraíba unit, located in Jaguarari, resulted in the death of 45-year-old machine operator José Ronaldo on Friday night, October 23, 2026.
Preliminary reports suggest the accident occurred when the operator stopped a motor grader on a ramp to perform an activity in front of the equipment. It is suspected that the machine moved and struck him, causing a femur fracture. Although company rescue services provided first aid and transported him to a hospital, he did not survive his injuries.
ERO Caraíba issued an official statement expressing regret and confirming that they are providing support to the victim's family. The company has announced a 24-hour suspension of all production activities at the Pilar, Vermelhos, and Surubim mines, as well as the plant, to reflect on workplace safety. Production is expected to resume on Sunday, October 25.
