Machine vision and 3D technology advance logistics automation

Logistics and warehousing sectors are increasingly adopting advanced technologies such as machine vision, 3D sensing, and AI algorithms to match the automation levels seen in manufacturing. Unlike the highly structured environments of manufacturing, logistics involves handling variable shapes, sizes, and materials in less structured settings like conveyor belts and loading areas.

Recent technical advances in neural processing and 3D sensing allow for more effective visual automation. Key applications include vision-guided robotics for picking and sorting items. For example, one industrial food manufacturer utilized machine vision to guide robotic arms, achieving picking speeds of 25 to 30 packages per minute. This integrated solution reportedly secured up to 75 per cent cost savings compared to traditional inspection methods while reducing error rates.
