Machu Picchu forest fire remains active as Peru's SERFOR continues monitoring

The National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), under the Ministry of Development Agriculture and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), is maintaining permanent monitoring of an underground forest fire in the Machu Picchu district of Urubamba province, Cusco department, Peru. The fire was first detected on 3 August 2026 at coordinates ‑13.17822 latitude, ‑72.53267 longitude, within the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Technical reports for 3‑4 August documented the fire’s behavior and were sent to the Cusco Regional Emergency Operations Center, the Office of Disaster Risk Management, the regional early‑warning system and the Cusco regional government. As of 4 August the fire remained active, and SERFOR continues to track its evolution and provide timely information to authorities.
