Machu Picchu implements new ticketing system to combat fraud
Peru's Ministry of Culture has launched a 30-day trial for a new ticketing system at Machu Picchu to combat widespread fraud and inefficiency. The transition follows reports that approximately 63 percent of previous bookings were never finalized, effectively blocking legitimate travelers from accessing the site.
Authorities have identified a 'mafia' of roughly 40 tourism agencies that allegedly used bots and false identities to hoard thousands of tickets, which were then resold to tourists at significantly inflated prices. In one instance, a single agency reportedly secured 11,200 entries through these illicit methods.
Under the new Tu Boleto platform, the previous three-hour reservation window has been replaced by a strict 15-minute limit to complete purchases. Once a payment is confirmed, tickets will be issued nominatively, meaning they are tied directly to the visitor's personal identification. While the system is being updated, the daily visitor limits—5,600 during peak season and 4,500 during other periods—will remain unchanged.
