Machu Picchu implements new visitor capacity study and ticketing system
Peru has initiated a technical study to determine the exact visitor capacity for Machu Picchu and establish new management measures for the archaeological site. Specialists from the Italian firm A. R. S. Progetti S. P. A. have begun fieldwork within the citadel and the Inca Trail to assess carrying capacity and conservation needs across more than 30,000 hectares.
The study aims to create an adaptive management model using digital tools, territorial information systems, and continuous monitoring to protect the site's cultural and natural heritage. The results will be used to propose new visitor limits and flow controls.
In conjunction with these management updates, the Ministry of Culture has modified the ticket purchasing process. The previous long-term reservation system has been replaced by a direct sales mechanism with confirmed payment. Under the new system, available tickets are held for a maximum of 15 minutes during the transaction to ensure transparency and control. Travelers are advised to plan their dates, circuits, and routes in advance and have identification ready, as tickets are now strictly linked to the visitor's personal documents.
