Machu Picchu: Over 2.5 km of pre-Hispanic paths discovered

Archaeologists have identified more than 2.5 kilometers of pre-Hispanic paths, along with potential platforms and terraces, near the Mandor Wall in the vicinity of Machu Picchu. The discovery was made during preliminary archaeological reconnaissance in July 2026 using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology.

LiDAR allowed researchers to penetrate the dense vegetation and rugged terrain of the cloud forest to detect structures not easily visible from the surface. Among the findings is a main path at least 1.2 kilometers long featuring a zigzag pattern. While these characteristics are compatible with Inca construction techniques, officials noted that further specific archaeological research is required to definitively establish the chronology and functionality of the site.

The project is a result of scientific cooperation between the Cusco Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) and the Center for Andean Studies at the University of Warsaw. This discovery is expected to expand understanding of the territorial configuration, access systems, and cultural landscape associated with the Machu Picchu site.
