Machu Picchu railway services resume after train collision in Cusco
Railway operations on the Ollantaytambo–Machu Picchu route have resumed following a collision between an Inca Rail train and a PeruRail unit near Pampacahua in Cusco. The incident, which occurred around 1:25 PM, resulted in no reported personal injuries. Ferrocarril Transandino S. A. authorized the resumption of services starting at 5:40 PM on October 2, 2026, after technical inspections were completed to ensure infrastructure safety.
Separately, infrastructure development continues in the Sacred Valley, where the Ollantaytambo–Pumamarca highway project has surpassed 80% physical progress. Supported by an investment of over S/ 18.8 million from the Cusco Regional Government, the road aims to benefit more than 11,000 residents. Once completed, the paved route is expected to reduce travel time to the Pumamarca archaeological site by approximately 10 minutes and improve connectivity for local agricultural transport and tourism.
