Machu Picchu tourism reaches 1.3 million visitors in 2026
Machu Picchu has recorded approximately 1.3 million visitors so far in 2026, according to Saúl Caipani, the Tourism Manager for the Municipality of Machu Picchu. This figure remains below the pre-pandemic benchmark of 1.8 million visitors.
Caipani noted that while recent ticket availability has increased flow, significant logistical challenges persist. A primary concern is the limited availability of rail transport, specifically regarding the Hidroeléctrica route. Currently, the route only offers two frequencies, which can force tourists arriving or departing after midday to travel on foot.
Additionally, while there have been improvements to the ticketing system, issues regarding long queues and public service remain. Caipani highlighted the need for more service windows and better sheltered spaces to protect visitors from the elements while they wait.
