Karol Nawrocki faces legal disputes and Constitutional Tribunal standoff
Polish President Karol Nawrocki is facing multiple legal and political challenges. A civil lawsuit is underway regarding an Onet report alleging Nawrocki was involved in bringing prostitutes to the Grand Hotel in Sopot during his time as a security guard. During the proceedings, witnesses failed to appear and were fined 3,000 PLN.
Simultaneously, a political dispute has emerged regarding Maciej Berek, who was elected by the Sejm as a judge for the Constitutional Tribunal. Berek has requested a date for his swearing-in, but the President’s office is withholding the ceremony until Berek provides documentation verifying his required ten-year professional experience as a legal counsel. Berek has stated he will wait a few days for a response but has prepared further steps.
The situation has drawn international attention, with the Venice Commission announcing it will review the legal standards regarding presidential powers to oversee judicial swearing-in ceremonies. A recent poll indicates that 56% of Poles believe Nawrocki should proceed with Berek’s swearing-in.
Additionally, controversy has surfaced regarding allegations that a private foundation offered paid sponsorship packages, including meetings with the President, for up to $100,000. Both the foundation and the President’s Chancellery have denied these allegations.
