Macina displacement grows following attacks in central Mali

Increased violence in central Mali has forced over 3,400 people to flee to the town of Macina in the Ségou region. The displacement follows armed attacks on the localities of Souleye on September 1 and Touara on September 15, 2026.

Many of the displaced individuals, primarily women and children, are living in precarious conditions. Some are sleeping outdoors and face severe shortages of food, clean water, and adequate shelter. Local social development services report that the influx of people has added to an existing population of approximately 5,000 displaced persons already in the area.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has deployed a mobile clinic in Macina to support local health structures, treating roughly 150 patients daily. Medical teams report high instances of malaria and respiratory infections linked to poor living conditions. Humanitarian needs remain critical, specifically regarding food, shelter, dignity kits, and psychosocial support.
