Mackenzie Sports Club faces ownership disputes ahead of reopening

The remodeled Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) in Linden, Guyana, is scheduled to reopen on December 13 to host the opening games of the 2026 Kashif and Shanghai Football Tournament. The venue, which is approaching its 70th anniversary, has recently been referred to by some as the ‘Mackenzie Stadium.’

However, the reopening has resurfaced long-standing disputes regarding the legal ownership, management, and development of the historic facility. Joseph Chapman, the General Secretary of the MSC, has called for greater transparency concerning the property.

Chapman noted that while initial discussions in August 2020 between the MSC Executive and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. suggested a collaborative approach to improving the facilities, tensions arose regarding how the development was ultimately handled.
