Mackinac Island ferry service threatened by fare dispute

A dispute over ferry fares has placed transportation access to Mackinac Island, Michigan, at risk. Following the consolidation of ferry services under a single out-of-state corporation, Hoffmann Marine, the company proposed fare increases in late 2024.

In response, the island's city government attempted to intervene and reject the higher prices. Consequently, Hoffmann Marine threatened to cease service to the island next year, claiming that local leadership has made service "untenable and unsustainable."

The conflict has escalated from a local pricing issue to a legal and political battle involving federal courts and the Michigan State Capitol. State Senator John Damoose expressed concern regarding the implications of a single private entity potentially being able to "literally cut off access" to a part of the state.
