Macklin Celebrini named youngest San Jose Sharks captain
The San Jose Sharks have named 20-year-old forward Macklin Celebrini as the team captain, making him the youngest captain in the franchise's history. The announcement was made on Friday, with former captain and Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Thornton presenting Celebrini with his new jersey in the locker room.
Celebrini succeeds Logan Couture, who retired following a career-ending injury. The appointment follows a standout season for Celebrini, who recorded 115 points (45 goals and 70 assists) in 82 games, setting a new franchise record for points in a single season. He also recently served as captain for Canada during the 2026 IIHF World Championship.
General Manager Mike Grier and Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky cited Celebrini’s work ethic, leadership, and ability to integrate teammates as key reasons for the decision. Celebrini is entering the final year of his entry-level contract before a five-year, $94 million extension begins next season.
