Macky Sall maintains six UN Security Council endorsements in Secretary-General race
The race for the United Nations Secretary-General position remains highly competitive following an informal second indicative vote by the UN Security Council on August 21. Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has maintained his position with six endorsements, though he faces seven oppositions and two abstentions. Sall, who was officially presented as a candidate by Burundi on March 2, 2026, is campaigning on a platform of UN reform, preventive diplomacy, and restoring trust in multilateralism.
Other candidates are seeing shifts in momentum. Guyana's Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett is gaining strength with eight endorsements, placing her just one vote shy of the nine required for designation. Uganda's Olara Otunnu also saw progress, increasing his support from two to five endorsements. Conversely, Rebeca Grynspan's support fell from ten to seven, and Michelle Bachelet experienced a significant decline in endorsements.
To secure the position, a candidate must obtain at least nine votes from the fifteen Security Council members and avoid a veto from any of the five permanent members: the United States, China, Russia, France, or the United Kingdom. Amidst the competition, Senegal and Uganda have entered discreet discussions to explore the possibility of a unified African candidate to strengthen the continent's influence in the selection process.
