Macondo set design details revealed for ‘Cien años de soledad’ series

Production teams for the series adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s ‘Cien años de soledad’ have revealed the extensive architectural and design efforts used to recreate the fictional world of Macondo.

Architects Carolina García Castro and Jorge Alberto Yepes from the firm Desde Cero led the design of the Buendía family home. The set was constructed in Alvarado, Tolima, Colombia, within a 3,000-square-meter hangar to protect it from weather and allow for physical transformations. The structure was designed to evolve over a century, transitioning from a simple wooden house to a two-story residence showing signs of decay and abandonment.

Production designer Bárbara Enríquez described the project as a career pinnacle, noting the immense responsibility of visualizing a world held in the minds of millions of readers. The design process involved deep research into Colombian Caribbean architecture and extensive travel through the region to ensure authenticity. Enríquez suggested that the scale of this physical set construction may be rare in an era increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence.
