Macquarie Island researchers evacuated over H5 bird flu threat

Australian authorities are evacuating dozens of researchers and support staff from Macquarie Island due to the potential outbreak of H5 bird flu. The decision, made by the Australian Antarctic Division, aims to protect the mental health of the 24 personnel stationed on the remote island.

Experts anticipate a significant mass mortality event among the island’s large elephant seal population during the upcoming spring breeding season. While H5 bird flu has not yet been detected on Macquarie Island, similar outbreaks at Heard and McDonald Islands resulted in mortality rates as high as 90 per cent for seal pups.

Sean Sullivan, deputy secretary of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, stated that while the direct risk of H5 bird flu to humans is considered low, the psychosocial risks of witnessing large-scale wildlife deaths are significant. The evacuation will be conducted by the icebreaking research vessel RSV Nuyina, which will retrieve staff and essential cargo within the next two months.
