Macquarie University study links routine disruption to anxiety
A study published in the scientific journal JMIR Formative Research indicates that disrupting healthy daily routines can lead to symptoms of anxiety and depression in healthy adults within just two weeks.
Researchers from Macquarie University in Australia conducted the study by observing volunteers who reduced essential well-being practices—such as adequate sleep, physical activity, and cognitive stimulation—for 14 days. The results showed significant declines in mood, increased irritability, and reduced energy levels.
To maintain emotional stability and protect the brain, the authors recommend five key habits: regular sleep, physical exercise, social interaction, a balanced diet, and engaging in pleasurable cognitive activities. The study highlights how quickly the brain reacts to the loss of these positive stimuli.
