MACRA proposes AI-powered smart city surveillance for Blantyre
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has proposed a Smart City Surveillance Initiative in Blantyre to enhance security and urban management. The project involves installing AI-powered smart cameras capable of detecting objects, identifying incidents, and providing real-time surveillance support.
According to MACRA Director General Dr. Mayamiko Nkoloma, the technology aims to reduce theft, vandalism, and other criminal activities. The initiative is intended to work in collaboration with the Malawi Police Service and the Road Traffic Directorate to strengthen crime prevention and response. The proposed pilot includes intelligent surveillance, number plate recognition, and pedestrian and traffic monitoring, coordinated through a central command centre.
Initial deployment locations mentioned include the Chichiri Roundabout, the MUBAS pedestrian crossing, the Clock Tower Roundabout, and Limbe Market. Blantyre City Assembly officials, including CEO Costly Chanza and Mayor Isaac Jomo, have expressed support for the project, noting its alignment with the city’s 2024 urban blueprint and security priorities.
