Macron endorses US-Denmark agreement on Greenland sovereignty

French President Emmanuel Macron has endorsed a new agreement between the United States and Denmark regarding security arrangements in Greenland. Macron stated that the deal helps to ‘reaffirm Danish sovereignty’ over the territory and respects international law, which he noted was a key requirement for France.

The agreement follows months of tension regarding the strategic Arctic island. Macron indicated that the understanding serves to calm regional tensions and could enhance cooperation for the benefit of Greenland's residents. He also confirmed that France will continue to work with its partners within NATO, including through joint military exercises.

Greenland maintains autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark and holds increasing strategic importance in the Arctic due to its geographic location and role in the security and military calculations of surrounding nations.
