Madagascar activists report betrayal by interim government
One year after massive protests led to the removal of President Andry Rajoelina, young activists in Madagascar report feeling betrayed by the current interim government. The movement, driven by Gen Z, initially gained momentum in September 2025 due to chronic water and electricity shortages, alongside rising costs of living and poverty.
A critical turning point occurred when members of the CAPSAT military unit joined the protesters, leading to the president fleeing the country. Colonel Michael Randrianirina, commander of the unit, was subsequently installed as the interim leader on October 17, 2025. While the transition initially brought relief, activists claim the promised reforms have not materialized.
Recent months have seen a resurgence of tension, with authorities reportedly using crackdowns to suppress continued dissent. Activists have faced arrests and charges of endangering state security, with some reporting violent treatment and loss of employment. Protesters express frustration that the new administration is utilizing similar tactics to the previous regime.
