Madagascar advances coffee and cocoa sector strategies
Madagascar is implementing strategic initiatives to bolster its key agricultural sectors, specifically coffee and cocoa.
In Antananarivo, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, alongside partners including FOFIFA, held a national workshop to develop the National Program for the Recovery and Strengthening of the Coffee Sector (2026–2036). The program aims to increase production to 100,000 tonnes of coffee annually by 2036, focusing on improving quality, competitiveness, and farmer incomes through technical and scientific advancements.
Simultaneously, Madagascar has secured the presidency of the International Cocoa Organization for the 2026-2027 cocoa year. Philippe Fontayne, Vice-President of the National Cocoa Council, has been elected to this role. The government intends to use this international leadership to enhance the visibility of Malagasy cocoa, which is noted for its unique aromatic profile, and to foster new technical and financial partnerships to support local producers.
