Madagascar and FAO partner to improve fertilizer quality control

The Madagascar Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (MiASA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have signed a memorandum of understanding to launch a technical project aimed at improving fertilizer quality control in the country.

Running until July 31, 2028, the project seeks to address declining soil fertility and the risks posed by non-compliant or poorly adapted fertilizers. The initiative, implemented by the Direction de la Protection des Végétaux (DPV), focuses on two primary objectives: modernizing the legal and strategic framework and strengthening operational control capacities.

Key actions include updating the National Fertilizer Strategy to align with SADC guidelines and upgrading the DPV laboratory. The project also involves specialized training for inspectors and a commitment to conducting at least 50 inspections of importers and distributors across the nation to support food security and sustainable production.
