Madagascar authorities investigate cross-border marriage network

Authorities in Madagascar are investigating a suspected cross-border matchmaking network targeting African women to find wives for Chinese men. The investigation follows the interception of a young Malagasy woman at Ivato International Airport who was reportedly promised 10 million ariary (approximately $2,300) to marry a local man in China.

Police have arrested four individuals and seized forged documents, fake seals, and 10 Malagasy passports. Investigators believe several women may have already been sent to China through this network. While these services are marketed as solutions for Chinese men struggling to find partners domestically, recent cases in Madagascar and Malawi highlight significant risks.

Reports indicate that Chinese men involved may face allegations of fraud, extortion, and criminal investigation, while the women recruited as brides face risks of deception, coercion, and human trafficking. Chinese embassies have issued warnings regarding these emerging trends.
