Madagascar baobab tree identified as new species
Researchers from the University of Wisconsin–Madison have identified a new species of baobab tree, Adansonia bozy, which is unique to Madagascar. The findings were published in the journal Taxon.
Previously, members of this species were classified under Adansonia za. While the two species appear similar, genetic analysis demonstrated that the northern populations of A. za are more closely related to other northern Malagasy baobab species rather than A. bozy. This distinction is expected to influence conservation efforts for these endangered trees.
Before this discovery, there were eight recognized species of baobabs: one in Australia, one in continental Africa, and six in Madagascar. The research was led by Nisa Karimi and included collaboration with David Baum from UW–Madison, as well as researchers from the Missouri Botanical Garden and Iowa State University.
