Madagascar commemorates first anniversary of 2025 political transition

Madagascar marked the first anniversary of the September 25, 2025, events, a period of unrest that led to a significant political transition. A commemorative ceremony was held at Anosy, featuring the unveiling of a memorial stele dedicated to the victims of the September and October 2025 protests.

Colonel Randrianirina, the current head of state, attended the event to lay a wreath after returning from the United Nations General Assembly. He stated the ceremony serves as a reminder of the struggle for change and the individuals who fought to bring the current leadership to power. The event was attended by government members, political and military figures, and various youth and student associations.

The unrest that began on September 25, 2025, was characterized by protests from the 'Gen-Z' demographic and municipal councilors, which eventually led to the exile of former leader Andry Rajoelina. The transition involved military intervention from the Capsat camp and was subsequently validated by the High Constitutional Court.
