Madagascar corruption probe targets former leaders and airport officials

The Anti-Corruption Pole (PAC) in Madagascar has received complaints involving several former high-ranking officials, including former President Andry Rajoelina and former Prime Minister Christian Ntsay. These legal proceedings are currently suspended pending a decision from the High Constitutional Court regarding the jurisdiction's competence.

One specific case involves the alleged embezzlement of 36 kilograms of gold and various precious stones from the Ministry of Mines and Strategic Resources, an incident first revealed in June 2022. Figures named in this investigation include Christian Ntsay, former holder of the mining portfolio Fidiniavo Ravokatra, and former Secretary General Herilaza Imbiky.

In a separate but related crackdown on systemic corruption, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina has denounced widespread malpractice within public services, specifically targeting Ivato Airport. He highlighted the illegal export of national wealth, noting that an estimated 100 tons of gold leave the country annually, valued at approximately $10 billion. Randrianirina has called for immediate sanctions and investigations into customs, border police, and judicial corruption to combat the economic impact on the population.
