Madagascar kidnapping probe triggers raid on Masonic temple in Antananarivo

Prosecutor Narindra Rakotoniaina confirmed that investigators raided a Masonic temple, the Loge Étoile australe, in the Ivandry district of Antananarivo as part of the ongoing probe into a wave of kidnappings and murders in Madagascar. The operation, shown in a ministry video, uncovered a coffin, skeletal remains, administrative documents, and a ritual altar resembling a church altar. Rakotoniaina suggested the possibility of a human sacrifice but stressed that the hypothesis is based on preliminary findings and that the investigation remains open.

Three individuals were detained, including Renivohitra, the head of the Antananarivo‑Renivohitra school district, and are being charged with sorcery, grave desecration, kidnapping and murder. The raid has fueled public speculation and rumors that Freemasonry is linked to the crimes, despite the fact that Masonic groups in Madagascar are legally registered associations and not secret societies. Commentators note that the current media frenzy reflects broader social anxiety and a tendency to seek scapegoats amid the kidnapping crisis.
