Madagascar marks First Republic anniversary amid political transition

Madagascar recently marked the anniversary of the proclamation of the First Republic with a large-scale civil-military parade in Antsohihy. The ceremony, held at the Ambalabe-Est airport, featured a troop review by President Michaël Randrianirina and the Chief of the General Staff. The event included international diplomatic presence, notably a delegation from Chad led by National Assembly President Ali Kolotou Tchaïmi, representing President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.

This commemoration occurs one year after the political upheaval involving former President Andry Rajoelina. Following eighteen days of protests led by 'Generation Z' in October 2025, Rajoelina left the country. Reports indicate that the former leader is currently residing in Dubai, while his former associates have either joined the military authorities, gone into exile, or faced imprisonment during the subsequent political restructuring.
