Madagascar seeks 400 million USD to restructure livestock sector

Madagascar is seeking to mobilize over 1,700 billion ariary (approximately 400 million USD) to restructure its livestock sector, which currently accounts for 13% of the national GDP.

During high-level panels held at the Carlton Anosy, officials discussed the need for optimal resource distribution to drive growth and generate mass employment. According to Unicef macro-budgetary analyses, the livestock sector has received only 5.7% of the public agricultural budget, falling short of the 10% investment level recommended by the Maputo Declaration. Currently, the sector relies on external donors for 78% of its funding.

Minister of Livestock Riana Nantenaina Randrianomenjanahary noted that the funds are essential to address structural obstacles, including limited access to veterinary care, low yields, poor animal feed quality, and a heavy dependence on imported inputs such as maize for poultry. The government aims to utilize a finalized Master Plan for Livestock to optimize productive value chains, including bovine, ovine, and caprine sectors.
