Madawaska to cover $41,000 deficit from music festival

The town of Madawaska will use funds from an economic development reserve account to cover a $41,812 deficit resulting from the Northern Maine Summerfest. The single-day festival, held in late August on the shores of Long Lake, incurred $90,000 in expenses against less than $38,000 in revenue. While the event was originally budgeted at $75,000, officials noted that the final costs exceeded expectations.

The Madawaska Select Board recently suspended town manager David Daigle regarding his handling of the event's funding, alleging a “blatant disregard” for instructions to cap expenses at $75,000. Using the reserve account, which contains revenue from a tax increment financing district dating back eight years, allows the town to cover the shortfall without requiring a special public vote to access undesignated funds.

Economic and Community Development Director Kristen Henry stated that the town will apply lessons learned from the initiative, including the need for more conservative revenue assumptions, stronger financial checkpoints, and better contingency planning.
