Maddalusa water crisis drives Italian PD deputies to call for structural fixes

The fraction of Maddalusa in Sicily, home to roughly 2,000 residents, has been left without water for weeks during the peak summer season, creating a serious public‑health risk. PD deputies Giovanna Iacono and Michele Catanzaro have each lodged parliamentary interpellations – Iacono to the Prime Minister and the health and interior ministers, Catanzaro to the regional government and relevant departments – urging both national and regional authorities to provide a permanent, legally sound solution.

The deputies criticize the measures adopted at a prefectural meeting on 7 July, which limited water‑truck deliveries to five vulnerable categories for only three months, calling them insufficient. They warned that “the situation in Maddalusa has reached a critical point, with hundreds of families, including elderly, disabled, chronically ill patients and minors, deprived of water for weeks.” The PD argues that the long‑standing centre‑right administrations at local, regional and national levels have failed to act decisively, and demand structural reforms to restore safe water supply.
