Maddy Cusack inquest delayed following emergence of new evidence

The coroner’s inquest into the death of former Sheffield United midfielder Maddy Cusack has been delayed until December 7, 2026. The postponement follows the emergence of 699 pages of new evidence provided by Sheffield United, which led to an adjournment in July after the initial proceedings began in June.

Maddy Cusack, 27, was found dead at her family home in Horsley, Derbyshire, on September 20, 2023. During the inquest, testimony has highlighted conflicting perspectives regarding the club's culture. Former teammate Nina Wilson testified that players felt ostracized and isolated under then-manager Jonathan Morgan, suggesting that Cusack’s death might have been preventable and calling for mandatory psychological support at clubs.

While a third-party investigation commissioned by Sheffield United previously found no wrongdoing by club personnel, the Cusack family has expressed frustration over the legal delays. To honor her memory and raise funds for the Maddy Cusack Foundation, which supports girls in football and education, her sister Olivia recently led a 29-mile walk from Bramall Lane to the family home.
