Made for Germany initiative pledges over 850 billion euros in German investments

The Made for Germany corporate initiative has announced that 147 companies and investors have pledged to invest more than 850 billion euros in Germany by 2028. This represents a significant increase from the 631 billion euros pledged by 61 founding members at the initiative's launch in 2025. In 2025 alone, more than 200 billion euros were reportedly invested.

During a meeting in Berlin with Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, leaders of the initiative highlighted both opportunities and challenges. Finance Minister Klingbeil emphasized the potential of industrial artificial intelligence to drive growth, noting that German companies like Siemens, Bosch, and Thyssenkrupp possess vast amounts of industrial data. He also noted growing investor interest in Germany, supported by Deutsche Bank research.

However, the initiative faces scrutiny and sector-specific variations. The Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) noted that current data does not yet show a clear additional effect from the initiative beyond previously planned projects. Furthermore, while energy providers and investors are increasing their commitments, infrastructure operators and the pharmaceutical sector have shown more restraint. Siemens CEO Roland Busch also noted that while industrial AI is a major opportunity, some key AI developments, such as Siemens' own base models, are being centered on the US West Coast.
