Madeira Airport uses elevated viaduct runway to overcome terrain
Madeira Airport in Portugal utilizes a unique engineering solution to overcome the geographical constraints of being situated between steep mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. To accommodate larger aircraft, the runway was extended using a massive elevated platform supported by 180 reinforced concrete pillars.
These pillars, some exceeding 60 meters in height, function similarly to a highway viaduct. The structure is equipped with integrated shock distribution systems designed to absorb the heavy impact loads from landing passenger planes. Due to the harsh maritime environment, the platform is subject to constant electronic monitoring to protect against salt-water corrosion, high humidity, and heavy waves.
Despite the structural solution, the airport presents significant operational challenges. The surrounding mountains cause sudden wind shifts and severe turbulence, even when wind speeds are relatively low. Consequently, pilots are required to undergo specialized simulation training and obtain additional certifications to land at the facility.
