Madeira celebrates Festa do Monte religious tradition
The Festa do Monte is being celebrated in Madeira, honoring the island's patron saint, Nossa Senhora do Monte. This tradition dates back to the early colonization of the island and is considered the largest Christian festival in Madeira.
The devotion to the patron saint is linked to a historical tragedy in 1803, when a landslide caused approximately one thousand deaths. Following this calamity, the Diocese of Funchal designated Nossa Senhora do Monte as the patron saint of Madeira in 1804.
Key religious events include a Solemn Mass and a procession scheduled for August 15. Other local activities include photography exhibitions, solidarity initiatives, gastronomic festivals, and regattas.
