Madeira heat warning extended as UV index stays very high

Portugal's Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has extended the yellow heat warning for the Madeira archipelago until 18:00 on Monday, 3 August. The alert covers the island’s southern coast and mountainous areas, where temperatures are expected to approach 30 °C.

The agency also warned that the ultraviolet (UV) radiation index will remain very high over the next several days, with values of 8‑10 on a scale of 0‑15. Such levels can cause skin burns in under ten minutes for very fair skin and may damage eyes. Authorities advise using sunscreen of at least SPF 30, wearing UV‑blocking sunglasses, hats and light clothing, and staying well hydrated. The UV index is forecast to dip to 8 on Sunday before rising again on Monday.
