Madeira PSP reports drop in violent crime amid road safety concerns

The Public Security Police (PSP) Regional Command of Madeira reported a 37% decrease in violent and serious crimes during the first half of 2026. Superintendent Ricardo Abreu Matos noted that while violent crime is trending downward, road safety remains a critical concern. In the first six months of 2026, eight people died in road accidents, and there has been an increase in accidents compared to the same period in 2025.

Between August 28 and September 3, 2026, the region recorded 73 traffic accidents, resulting in 21 minor injuries and two serious injuries. Funchal saw the highest number of incidents with 24 accidents. Police enforcement operations during this week led to 13 arrests for various road offenses, including driving under the influence and driving without a valid license.

In terms of narcotics enforcement, the PSP intercepted approximately 170 people for drug possession and arrested 19 suspects for trafficking in the first half of the year. Seizures included 5.8 kg of cocaine, 2.8 kg of heroin, 2.4 kg of hashish, and 5 kg of new psychoactive substances. To combat road safety issues, the PSP plans to install new radars on the highway and increase mobile surveillance.
