Madeira strengthens fire prevention with new aerial unit, police boost and cattle grazing plan

The regional government of Madeira confirmed that a second aerial fire‑fighting asset will be operational in July, following a pending protocol between the National Emergency Authority and the Air Force. At the same time, 30 new PSP police officers will be posted to Madeira Airport by the end of the month as part of a broader reinforcement of security staff.

Separately, the PS‑Madeira party called for the introduction of directed cattle grazing to clear vegetation and reduce wildfire risk. Party leader Célia Pessegueiro announced plans to submit a legislative proposal to regulate pastoral management in the region’s forested areas, linking it to the recently approved Regional Integrated Rural Fire Management System.
