Madeira to duplicate Ribeira Brava-Calheta expressway
The duplication of the expressway between Ribeira Brava and Calheta is set to become the second most significant infrastructure project in the Madeira region over the next decade, following the construction of the new Central and University Hospital of Madeira.
Pedro Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, announced that the project is already in the preparation phase, with an initial regional government investment exceeding two million euros. The plan involves duplicating the current expressway and extending the fast road to the municipality of Calheta, covering the Ponta do Sol municipality and including a connection to Canhas. The project is driven by high daily traffic volumes on this axis, which serves three western coast municipalities.
In addition to the expressway, the regional government intends to proceed with the requalification of Regional Road 222 in Canhas, including the construction of sidewalks. Other planned interventions include a promenade between the village of Ponta do Sol and Lugar de Baixo, as well as the requalification of the John dos Passos Cultural Center.
