Madeira volunteer firefighters face allegations of intimidation and poor conditions
Deputy Francisco Gomes of the Chega party has reported an alleged ‘climate of persecution, intimidation, and fear’ within several volunteer firefighter corporations in Madeira. The allegations follow reports received directly from firefighters regarding internal operations and command structures.
Specific complaints include inadequate working conditions, such as deficiencies in changing rooms, showers, sanitary facilities, and offices. Gomes noted that these issues may violate labor laws and impact basic hygiene and public health standards.
Furthermore, the deputy highlighted reports of pressure exerted on firefighters who express dissenting opinions. According to the allegations, individuals who question internal decisions or report problems may face retaliation or marginalization. The Chega party is also seeking to investigate the management of financial resources within these associations to ensure transparency.
