Madeiran community in South Africa faces security concerns

The PSD-Madeira Parliamentary Group has expressed significant concern regarding the safety of Madeiran citizens and their descendants living in South Africa. During a meeting with Victor Gomes, the Counselor for Madeiran Communities in South Africa, Deputy Carlos Fernandes highlighted an increasing wave of violence and kidnappings affecting members of the diaspora.

Fernandes called for Portuguese authorities to closely monitor the situation and ensure the protection of citizens residing abroad. The meeting also addressed the urgent need to re-establish direct air links between Portugal and South Africa to facilitate travel and strengthen ties between the diaspora and Madeira. The discussions included the current status of TAP and the importance of regional government support for Madeiran associations, which play a vital role in preserving regional culture and traditions.
