Madeirina macrorhiza: New Endemic Plant Genus Identified in Madeira

A new botanical genus, Madeirina, has been established for the endemic Madeira plant Madeirina macrorhiza. The discovery was announced at a symposium hosted by the University of Madeira, highlighting the island as a natural laboratory for evolution. Researchers led by Professor Miguel Sequeira of the University of Madeira, together with collaborators from the University of Kansas and the University of California, demonstrated that the species, previously classified as Tolpis macrorhiza, possesses distinct morphological and genetic characteristics that merit its own genus.

The symposium, titled “Natural laboratories for evolution: the importance of collaborative research in identifying diversity on oceanic islands,” emphasized the role of genetic markers in uncovering hidden diversity and informing conservation strategies for island flora. The finding adds to the six plant genera that are exclusive to Madeira and underscores the need for ongoing protection of the archipelago’s unique biodiversity.
