Madhur Bhandarkar: From selling gum to acclaimed Bollywood director

Film director Madhur Bhandarkar, known for portraying social realities in Bollywood, has a career defined by significant early struggles. Born in Mumbai on August 26, 1968, Bhandarkar faced severe financial hardship that forced him to leave school after the sixth grade. To support his family, he worked selling chewing gum at traffic signals.

During his period of struggle, he worked at a cassette store and built a collection of approximately 1,700 cassettes to study the technical aspects of filmmaking. While his directorial debut, ‘Trishakti’ (1999), was a major box office failure that led to industry distancing itself from him, he achieved success with the 2001 film ‘Chandni Bar’. This breakthrough allowed him to continue making films like ‘Page 3’, ‘Traffic Signal’, and ‘Fashion’, which focus on the realities behind the glamour of society.
