Madhuri the elephant returns to Kolhapur after specialized care

Madhuri, an elephant who has lived in Kolhapur for over three decades, is returning to Maharashtra following more than a year of specialized medical treatment at the Vantara wildlife rehabilitation center in Jamnagar.

Madhuri was transferred to Vantara in July 2025 to address severe health issues, including advanced arthritis, chronic foot rot, and mobility challenges caused by years of restricted movement and use in public processions. Her rehabilitation program included hydrotherapy, laser therapy, and social interaction with other elephants to improve her physical and emotional well-being.

A High-Powered Committee (HPC) issued an order on September 9, 2026, allowing her return to Nandani Math in Kolhapur under strict conditions. The order mandates that Madhuri cannot be used for processions or any other public purposes. She must receive round-the-clock care and undergo medical examinations every two weeks. Vantara stated that while her condition has stabilized, her chronic health issues require ongoing veterinary monitoring and supportive management.
