Madison protests after Corey Ruiz shooting prompt mass bailouts and police‑training debate

A Wisconsin non‑profit, Freedom Inc., posted bail for more than 30 protesters arrested during a downtown Madison encampment that followed the July 22 fatal shooting of Corey Ruiz. Police said demonstrators blocked intersections, emptied dumpsters and set five small fires in metal containers. The organization aims to bail out 50 individuals and provided food and resources to those released.

Separately, an interview with University of Wisconsin Law School associate professor Ion Meyn examined the shooting, noting that police claim Ruiz brandished a knife and that the officer’s actions are likely to be deemed consistent with existing training. Meyn argued that communities need enforceable rules governing use of deadly force, as current police training often draws from a wide, informal network of sources beyond official department curricula.
