Madiun Customs Destroys 4.6 Million Illegal Cigarette Sticks

Indonesia's Madiun customs office (KPPBC TMP C Madiun) destroyed 4,628,624 illegal cigarette sticks – about 4.6 million – on 17 June 2026. The seized tobacco, amounting to 251,822 packs, was valued at roughly Rp 6.71 billion, and the operation prevented an estimated state loss of around Rp 4.2 billion.

Customs chief Heru Djatmika Sunindya said the confiscations resulted from a series of enforcement actions that included patrols on toll roads, inspections of night‑bus cargo, and checks on courier‑service deliveries. He emphasized that Madiun is not a production centre for illicit tobacco but serves as a key distribution and marketing hub, especially via the toll‑road network. Coordination with other customs units in East Java, local law‑enforcement agencies, and regional governments helped to dismantle the smuggling chain.

The destruction was carried out after the seized goods were declared state property under the relevant customs and tax regulations and received approval from the Ministry of Finance. The operation reflects ongoing efforts to curb the illegal tobacco trade and protect government revenues.
