Madona police chase ends in crash involving illegal border crossers
On September 24, a high-speed police chase in the Madona region of Latvia ended in a car accident. The incident began when police observed a Mazda exceeding the 50 km/h speed limit and failing to obey a stop sign.
Despite police attempts to stop the vehicle using sirens and lights, the driver fled the scene. The chase continued into the Bērzaunes parish along the P37 highway, where the vehicle eventually drove off the road and crashed.
The driver, a citizen of Moldova, was accompanied by two passengers, citizens of Afghanistan and Iran. Authorities noted that these individuals had previously crossed the Latvia-Belarus border illegally. All three occupants sustained injuries in the crash and were taken to a medical facility before being handed over to the State Border Guard.
A criminal process has been initiated against the driver regarding the intentional provision of persons with the possibility of staying illegally in Latvia.
