Madonie Park illegal landfill discovered by Carabinieri aerial reconnaissance
Carabinieri officers discovered an illegal open-air landfill within the Madonie Park in Sicily following an aerial reconnaissance mission. The site, located in the San Miceli area of Piano Battaglia, covers approximately 500 square meters of private land noted for its natural and landscape value.
Ground inspections revealed a variety of waste materials, including tires, metal scraps, plastics, and various vehicle components. Some materials are suspected to be hazardous and are awaiting technical analysis. The investigation, coordinated by the Termini Imerese Prosecutor's Office, also identified three vehicles and a work vehicle on-site that are being evaluated.
A 62-year-old local man responsible for the land has been reported to the prosecutor for unauthorized waste management. Authorities have placed the area and related assets under urgent preventive seizure to halt further environmental degradation.
