Madonna: archival photos reveal life before global fame
Archival photographs from 1979 have surfaced, documenting singer Madonna's life as a 21-year-old dancer in New York City before her rise to international superstardom. The images, captured by her then-boyfriend Dan Gilroy, depict her in casual attire such as hoodies and cargo pants, contrasting sharply with her later theatrical stage personas.
During this period, Madonna lived in a converted synagogue in Queens with Gilroy and his brother, Ed. While the brothers worked as waiters and comedians, Madonna began developing her musical skills, initially playing drums in the band Breakfast Club before transitioning to songwriting and vocals. In 1980, she formed Emmy and the Emmys to pursue an independent career.
Following their breakup, Gilroy retained a collection of photographs, videos, and personal letters sent by Madonna during her travels in Europe. Some of these materials have been featured in documentaries about her early career, and Gilroy has considered auctioning her early musical instruments and personal correspondence.
