Madonna University nursing students appeal expulsion over viral video
Madonna University in Rivers State has expelled approximately a dozen 500-level nursing students following the circulation of a viral video filmed within the university’s teaching hospital. The video, which featured students participating in a ‘Gen Z’ social media trend by dancing in hospital areas such as waiting rooms and staircases, garnered millions of views online.
In response to the disciplinary action, a final-year student released an emotional video appealing to the university management for leniency. She highlighted the significant academic and financial setbacks the expulsion poses for the students, who are currently preparing for final professional examinations and clinical rotations.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has also intervened, requesting that the university reconsider the severity of the punishment. While NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez acknowledged that the students' conduct fell below professional standards, he urged the institution to replace expulsion with a stern warning to avoid permanently altering the students' career paths.
